Best campsites for car-free days

Park once on Friday, drive nowhere until Monday.

The best measure of a family campsite is how little you touch the car once the tent is up. Every site here puts a full day out, a town, a towpath, a palace or a city, within reach on foot, by bike or by train, so the holiday starts the moment you park.

Two of these sites even manage the near-impossible: proper countryside camping with a railway station in walking distance. Charlbury's trains reach Oxford in 15 minutes, and Moreton-in-Marsh sits on the same Cotswold Line.

Can you go camping near Oxford without using a car every day?

Yes. Cotswold View at Charlbury has a station a mile's walk away with 15-minute trains to Oxford. The Oxford Camping and Caravanning Club Site has buses at the gate and a towpath walk into the city. Moreton-in-Marsh, Devizes (canal towpath), Wallingford and The Wildings (a footpath walk into Bourton-on-the-Water) all offer full car-free days.
